Homestay Program and its 20th Anniversary Reception Featuring the Hokkaido Product Fair
Nanka Dosanko Kai, based in Los Angeles, has fostered global understanding through homestay experiences for Hokkaido high school students since 1998. I contributed as a social practice artist, enhancing the program with creative projects that strengthened Japan-U.S. community ties.

The Nanka Dosanko Kai, a Los Angeles-based initiative, has been artistically connecting Hokkaido high school students with international homestay experiences since 1997, fostering cultural exchange and global understanding. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017, the program incorporated a Hokkaido Product Fair in Los Angeles, blending art, culture, and community engagement. As a social practice artist, I played a pivotal role in student selection, fundraising, and liaising with the Hokkaido Prefectural Government. I transformed these interactions into a collaborative art project, documenting and sharing the journey through various media. Post-program, our debriefing sessions evolved into cultural reunions, further nurturing the community bonds between Japan and the United States.
